What’s It About?
THE REZ is a sci-fi adventure story that follows Preen and Sav, two futuristic characters. While their society allows citizens to select how they look (skin color, hairstyle, added features like wings, fins, pointy ears), what information and learning people can access is restricted, censored, and limited to JEF, an artificial intelligence system -- controlling almost everything in their world -- even the food they eat! Their world has done away with brick-and-mortar schools, and libraries are obsolete. While learning and expertise are gained more efficiently through JEF, Preen and Sav find a historic phone that allows them to communicate with the kids of today (pastlings). The pastlings share strange ideas, like what it truly means to be a friend and how to show kindness to others. Through careful research, Preen and Sav access history as a way to find that social and emotional support and the well-being of others are unknown in their current world. Through their adventures, the two encounter many people and historical items that help them bring kindness and transparency back into society. The story shares their resistance endeavors to bring JEF down in an effort to help people think and do things for themselves once again. Unfortunately, JEF is much harder to defeat than one might think.
Is It Any Good?
The podcast is a standout for 9- to 11-year-olds who enjoy the futuristic sci-fi genre and/or graphic novels. The Rez was created specifically for this age range by taking into account humor, messaging, and comprehension based on child development and research surrounding the brain and learning at these ages. It's a great self-selected listen and could be great for guided listening or reading within a classroom. The story and its messaging lend themselves to writing, speaking, and listening learning standards or can easily be a springboard for social-emotional lessons. Several episodes pose questions about what kindness means and its importance in people's actions and relationships. Beyond kindness, other relevant topics surface through the story linking to media censorship and/or the banning of access to specific funds of knowledge and ways of knowing such as social media, library books, history, and curriculum.
The show's release was accompanied by a graphic novel and the launch of the website, where kids can have the opportunity to leave messages for characters and play games. Having both the book (currently free to download through a link on the website) and the podcast versions of the same story increases access for diverse and varied learners.
