What's the Story?

ANIMAL PLANET II begins with a concept crucial to the survival of creatures great and small: migration. Every year, as our planet revolves around the sun, pointing its axis toward the sun and then tilting away, the animals inhabiting the Earth move to access the food and water the seasons avail. Cape buffalo form mega-herds and cross the Kalahari in search of water. Seals lounge on the ice floes of the warming Arctic ocean. But lurking in the grasses, or under the water, are predators ready to snap them up to feed their own. How will animals survive the most persistent predator of all?

Engrossing and teeming with life, this nature documentary's got more carnage than other offerings in the genre. In Our Planet II, David Attenborough expertly explains the migration patterns of the world's creatures, while in a trembling aside, warns of the perils that lie in wake for the (oft soft and cuddly) creatures that rely on their parents to survive. In this show, sometimes the babies make it, and yep, sometimes they get gobbled up.

Nature documentary fans will feast on the brilliant cinematography. Those who are rooting for the baby animals might find kinder fare somewhere else.

  • Families can talk about perseverance in Our Planet II. How do animals fight to survive? What drives them forward, even when the odds are stacked against them?

  • Teamwork among groups of animals help them to accomplish difficult tasks. How does teamwork help you advance in your life?
