What's the Story?
MATILDAS: THE WORLD AT OUR FEET is a documentary series that offers a behind-the-scenes look at how Australia's national women's soccer team prepares for the 2023 FIFA World Cup. It follows coach Tony Gustavsson, team captain Sam Kerr, and other players on the team as they train, play, and prepare themselves for the most prestigious soccer competition in the world. Because it will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the team doesn't have to qualify for a spot, but the players are collectively working hard on their strategies, learning how to deal with the pressures of playing other top-ranked teams, and building their confidence to play the best they can and win on their home turf. It also reveals how individual team members negotiate their personal lives and goals to make this happen. But no matter what they do, they remain an inspiration for the next generation of female soccer players.
Is It Any Good?
The positive docuseries shows how the Matildas, who are nicknamed after an Australian folk song, navigate the highs and lows that come with preparing for the 2023 FIFA World Cup. While Matildas: The World at Our Feet prominently features top players like Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter, both of whom are household names in Australia, it also showcases many of their teammates, who also work hard and make major sacrifices to play on the national team. Despite focusing on a few challenges and game losses, Matildas: The World at Our Feet never stops feeling hopeful or inspiring. It's a great viewing option for fans of the sport, and will no doubt inspire young female soccer players around the world to keep dreaming and playing hard.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what it takes to become a soccer player on a national team. How much of what an athlete needs is talent, and how much is hard work and commitment? Can soccer players make a living being a team member of a national sports team in any country?
Matildas: The World at Our Feet highlights the sexism the team continues to face despite how well they play. Where do these gender stereotypes come from? What have been the consequences of this way of thinking on women and women's sports? How can we change it?
