What's the Story?
FRIGHT KREWE takes place in the 13⅓ ward in New Orleans, where local high-schooler and horror-obsessed tour guide Soleil walks visitors around historical sites and graveyards, explaining the local folklore and voodoo legends. This is more than a job for her, it's a passion. After Soleil and her classmates accidentally awaken an ancient demonic power while cleaning up a cemetery, she learns that the stories her family's been telling her are true: She really is a descendant of renowned New Orleans spiritualist Marie Laveau. Laveau and several other ghostly apparitions (known collectively as The Loa) appear to the kids, imbuing each of them with a special magical power they'll need to defeat the evil they've inadvertently unleashed. The kids must learn to overcome their differences and work together while navigating these unpredictable new powers if they hope to protect the city and the people they love.
Is It Any Good?
This is a cartoon about high school kids dealing with eerie ghost encounters and evil creatures galore -- often in settings like graveyards or abandoned warehouses -- but Scooby Doo it ain't. No shade to Shaggy and the gang, but that's a good thing! New Orleans has served as a backdrop for many spooky-themed stories due to the haunting mysteries that have long surrounded the city, but Fright Krewe doesn't merely use it as set dressing. While old-school cartoons usually reduce voodoo culture to a creepy doll you stick pins in, this series delves into the historical and cultural significance of this belief system to the Haitian people and New Orleans' residents.
The series blends paranormal legend with relatable real-world themes, from familial responsibilities to grief, or how to navigate your life after a close friendship falls apart. The animation is a delight to look at, full of little details that bring color and personality to the characters and their city. The scares here are slightly more intense than other horror-themed kid's animation, so it's probably not the best choice for the very young or easily frightened. But for kids looking for an offbeat entrée into the world of monster movies and mythology, it's a great pick.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about different cultures and their beliefs about what happens when we die. What do you think about the concepts the show touches on, like the existence of The Loa? Is the idea of these spirits comforting or creepy?
Kids: Talk about the relationships between "krewe" members. Did any of these kids remind you of you and your own friends? How did learning to cooperate help them protect the city and each other?
