What's the Story?
In EVERY DREAMING CREATURE, a child narrator dreams of being a variety of animals - a salamander, an elephant, a falcon, and more. In each dream, the narrator explores how it would be to live as that animal. For example, as a tiger, "Then there I was. A silent hunter, sneaking slyly. All the world was crackling dry twigs as I carefully placed my paw upon the earth." Unfortunately, for the dreamer, each dream is interrupted, presumably by a caregiving adult. However, as the beauty of the animal experience is highlighted, so the narrator emphasizes the joy of the human experience.
