What's the Story?
BECKHAM is a docuseries about the life of soccer player David Beckham. From his early years practicing in the family garden, to his days playing the sport professionally, the series offers a candid look at some of the most defining moments of Beckham's career. It also reveals some of what was happening in his personal life, and how it evolved as an adult. Interviews with Beckham and his wife Victoria, parents, coaches, friends, and fellow players offer intimate details about his life, while archive footage shows viewers how he grew up both on and off the pitch.
Is It Any Good?
The docuseries features David Beckham offering his sincere thoughts about his life and soccer career, and how it made him the person he is today. Conversations about his evolution as a world-class soccer player are intertwined with narratives about his personal life, including his 26-year (and counting) romance with his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, and the long-standing relationship he had with former Manchester United general manager Sir Alex Ferguson. There's also some surprisingly frank dialogue about Beckham's mental health throughout his career, especially when it came to being bullied by Manchester United fans. But what Beckham most succeeds at is demystifying the tabloid celebrity and revealing Beckham as a committed athlete who's very human. Some will find it all a bit self-promotional, but chances are that most soccer fans will find it compelling.
